New Smart Meters Are Coming to Your Community
Modernizing Meters for a More Reliable Electric System
This year, VPPSA member utilities are upgrading electric meters across their service areas. These smart meters are equipped with wireless, two-way communication, helping improve reliability, deliver more accurate bills, and support a more resilient electric grid.
Customers will receive notifications from their utility before installation begins.
What to Expect During Installation
- Installations are quick — usually just a few minutes.
- Expect a brief service interruption during the swap.
- Most installations do not require you to be home.
- All installers are authorized, identifiable utility staff who follow strict safety procedures.
- You will receive notice from your utility.
Benefits of Smart Meters
Smart meters support a stronger, more responsive grid — and offer improvements you’ll notice at home.
Benefits for You...
- Faster outage response. Smart meters alert the utility when power goes out, helping crews restore service sooner.
- More accurate billing. No more estimated reads; the utility receives precise usage data for every billing cycle.
- No additional fees for the upgraded meter.
- Reduced need for in‑person meter reading at your home.
...And for the Electric Grid
- Improved visibility helps utilities troubleshoot problems faster and keep the grid running smoothly.
- Better data enables proactive maintenance, smarter demand management, and easier integration of renewable energy.
Your Privacy and Security
Your smart meter does not collect personal information. It only transmits:
- Your household’s total electricity use, in 15‑minute increments, and
- Diagnostic information like voltage levels or outage status.
The smart meter cannot determine what appliances you’re using, what shows you watch, or any other private household activities. Utilities use encrypted, secure communication networks and follow strict cybersecurity protocols to protect customer usage information.
Why VPPSA is Helping Bring Smart Meters to Your Town
The new smart meters are made possible thanks to a statewide investment that allows municipal electric utilities to bring modern grid technology to their communities. More than 300,000 Vermonters already use smart meters, and VPPSA is helping municipal utilities deliver the same modern, reliable service to their member utilities’ communities. This shared approach lowers costs for everyone and brings advanced grid capabilities to local, community‑owned utilities.
